Outdoor Aquatic Center – Kīlauea, Hawai‘i
Restorative aquatic landscape integrating wellness, recreation, and environmental performance within Kīlauea’s coastal setting.
Design Intent
A curving promenade organizes pools, shade, and planting rooms; a central reflective pond anchors the layout for clear circulation and sightlines. For accesibility and safety, continuous accessible routes with gentle gradients and tactile cues are used joint with open sightlines and code-compliant edge treatments.
Project Elements
Lap & wellness pools, Spa enclave, Compact showers/changing, Lounges & umbrellas, Curved timber/gravel paths , Soft-edged parking & entry plaza, Reflective pond.
Materiality & Planting
Timber decking/boardwalks; layered palms, evergreens, perennials, and grasses for shade, privacy, and seasonal interest.
Sustainability & Water
Climate-adapted planting; permeable paving and vegetated swales; dark-sky lighting; reflective pond for biodiversity and microclimate.
Delivery Tools
- Modeling & Documentation: Developed in RhinoLands with coordinated 2D drawings, a detailed 3D site/planting model, and automated sections—supporting accurate visualization, quantity takeoffs, and cross-disciplinary coordination.
- Rendering: Visualizations produced with V-Ray.
